The Voluntary Sector pilot year came to an end on 31st March 2009. Figures for February and March 2009 are still to be confirmed by the central team but it appears we have surpassed the target of 950 screens, so a HUGE well done to everyone who participated in the pilot. We are unsure what SVSYF's role will be this year, but proejcts are encouraged to continue to promote the screening with young people at every opportunity. If you'd like to read a copy of the evaluation relating to the pilot you can dowload a copy here.

"Wii for a Wee" Chlamydia Event wii for wee event

The Galleries Shopping Centre in Washington is putting the health needs of young people first by hosting a North East campaign for Chlamydia awareness.

On the 1st and the 15th November a real example of partnership working at its best has been demonstrated when trained Youth Workers from Oxclose and District Young People’s Project in Washington, together with Kate Morris PCT Sexual Health Advisor, Alex Mallett from the COS College, Nat and the peer educators have encouraged customers to provide a urine sample to be confidentially tested for Chlamydia.

The event resulted in 107 screens and all participants were entered into a free prize draw ‘Wee for a Wii’ to win a Nintendo Wii games console. The Wii was won by Abi from Washington.

Chlamydia Screening Pilot Updates

Peer Educators in Sunderland
We have recently trained 14 young people as Chlamydia Peer Educators, who will be working in their own projects to help spread the word, and raise awareness. There are also a bank of Regional Peer Educators that are on hand to help out and will be volunteering at the city-wide Valentines Chlamydia event. If you are planning a Chlamydia awareness event and you think the peer educators will be able to help you please contact Amanda.

valentines gremlin The Funky Gremlin Times is a newsletter for people between 15-24 years old in Sunderland. It's an upbeat and informative way to let young people know about the sexually transmitted infection 'Chlamydia' and what the city is doing to make 'getting tested' as simple and as confidential as possible. It is distributed in various locations across the city three times a year, download an electronic copy of Issue no 2 here

Since June 2008 we have been working with Kate Morris and the Regional Chlamydia Screening Programme to try and increase the awareness of the risks of Chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases.

So far we 95 youth workers have undertaken the training and screens within the voluntary sector have increased by nearly 400% (based on the first 5 months of this year – compared to the whole of 07/08 figures).
