SVSYF News

Welcome to the 4th edition of our on-line newsletter. I hope you find it informative and interesting, don't forget if you have any news you would like to share then send it in ready of the next edition in March.

As you will see it's been a busy month for youth work in the local and national press, and many reports have been released including the Teenage pregnancy figures, and the Audit Commissions "Tired of Hanging around report". There are also some interesting training opportunities (many of them are free),

This month SVSYF have been facilitating the e-voting workshops at the Youthinc events that have been held around the city, gathering the views of young people and youth provision. We hope to be able to share some of these views with you next month once they are all collated.

Please send us any comments, queries or questions.
Amanda and Steve

In a rare outbreak of plain speaking, the Audit Commission (speaking about the assessment of Government grants to sport and leisure projects for young people) labeled the whole system a "dog's breakfast" (CYP Now, 29th Jan - 4th Feb. 09).

The report "Tired of hanging around" examines the problems that hinder the effectiveness of sports and leisure schemes for 8 - 19 yr olds who are in danger of drifting into antisocial behaviour. It found the system that funds such activities to be "wasteful, inefficient and bureaucratic"

logo rosaROSA - For our first ever grants, we are awarding £25,000 in total to fund projects with a focus on Body Image. We are particularly keen to hear ideas relating to those who are under 25 years of age Rosa aims to help more women and girls feel good about themselves – and get the help and healthcare they need.

The health issues we’re concerned about include poor body image, low self-esteem, eating disorders, and increased alcohol consumption among young women. Or the fact that some women are especially susceptible to ill health, poor support services and access to treatment – purely because they come from black and ethnic minority communities.

Rosa invests in projects that tackle these issues – from research projects to support groups - or piloting new ways to reach women and girls from all backgrounds with the information they need to help keep them well.

Training opportunities

MAD4U - Homelessness Education Programme The education programme has been designed and will be delivered by homeless young people aged 16-25 who wish to raise awareness amongst their peers of the common causes of homelessness and where they can go to for help. As a result of their first hand experience MAD4U aim to provide an opportunity for others to reflect on and be aware of the consequences of leaving home at an early age.

MAD4U are looking for youth clubs and young people who may benefit from all or part of its three-hour programme. Split into three one hour sessions, the programme, will carried out by MAD4U under the supervision of CRB controlled staff from Sunderland YMCA and Centrepoint and beside your own youth work staff. Each session has been designed to fit into Key Stage 4 PSHE or Citizenship curricula and its results fed into the forthcoming City of Sunderland Young Peoples Housing Strategy, to ensure housing and housing advice meets the needs of young people across the city.

For each session youth workers will receive:
· A detailed session plan prior to the session, allowing opportunities for any special learning needs to be taken into consideration
· A copy of the young peoples completed work for your own evidence
· A copy of the session notes, sum of all discussions held
· Advice and information on what to do if a young person presents to yourselves as homeless or in need of housing advice
· An opportunity to evaluate the session alongside the young people themselves

STUART WAITON the acclaimed author of ‘Scared of Kids’ and Director of Generation Youth Issues will be giving a FREE workshop and presentation, which will take critical look at society’s attitude to young people touching upon issues such as curfews, ASBO's, moral panics and the need for a balance between safety and freedom in young peoples’ lives.  Dr Waiton’s session will be a valuable resource to anyone working with young people or who are generally interested in issues around criminalization of young people and building genuine intergenerational relationships in communities.  The event will be held in the conference room at Scotswood Area Strategy on Armstrong Road in Scotswood, Newcastle upon Tyne at 2.30pm on Friday 6th March.

Money Mastery
Evidence shows that youth workers are probably the most significant role model around money and finance to many of the young people you work with. In times like these, where every day seems to bring a new financial crisis to the headlines, chances are money’s on your mind and the minds of your young people. Today, managing your money can be complicated and confusing, not to mention frightening – particularly if you don’t have much to go round. So if you don’t feel entirely confident about money or feel the control of your finances is slipping away, then where does that leave the young people you work with?
Money Mastery is designed to support youth workers, and other professionals who work with young people.Free training for youth workers. More details

British Safety Council Level 1 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work
As part of the biggest-ever drive to promote a healthier, safer and more sustainable society, the BSC is working with organisations to offer free health and safety qualifications to disadvantaged groups such as the homeless, disabled and those not in education, employment or training (NEETs or pre-NEETs).The BSC Level 1 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work is completely free of charge to any organisation supporting disadvantaged people. The benefits of achieving this qualification are threefold:
1)       Makes people more aware of health and safety issues
2)       Helps build people’s confidence and self-esteem by providing them with a qualification they can use in the workplace
3)       Makes people more employable by providing them with a nationally-recognised qualification

A range of charities have registered for this initiative including Crisis, Centrepoint, First Step Trust and the Salvation Army. To date, over 5,000 people have benefited from free Level 1 examinations. We are aiming to increase this figure to 20,000 in 2009. How it works Level 1 registration form

logo national family week

The government has announced that the UK's first National Family Week will be held from 25 to 31 May 2009. The initiative aims to celebrate and promote the social and personal benefits of family life and will consist of activities, national competitions and events for families in schools, children's centres, local councils and voluntary organisations.

How to participate - National Family Week offers not-for-profit organisations the exceptionally positive context of a celebratory national occasion through which to promote your activities. Organisations can use the week to showcase your work -how you support families, offer activities and services for families, develop family-friendly policies, or engage in other ways in the promotion of family life.

All not-for-profit organisations are invited to support and to take part in National Family Week for free. Already hundreds of organisations from around the UK, including but not limited to the following, have committed their support: Exactly what type of activity or event is entirely up to you, and may be different (and possibly very unique) depending on the nature of your organisation. Your event doesn't have to be a specially organised, one-off event -perhaps it is something that you regularly do as an organisation already, but with a special added family value or 'twist'? Or you could simply join in with National Family Week’s ‘core activities’ – perhaps by hosting a family picnic on the 25th May and being part of the record breaking attempt for the World’s Largest Simultaneous Picnic.
