Seen and Heard
We're looking for inspiring young people from around the world. Young people who've made a real difference to their own lives and the lives of others. Young people who make their voices heard about the issues that matter. Whether it was contributing to a magazine, defending the rights of young carers, or giving a voice to children on the streets – if you or someone you know has used their speaking and listening skills to achieve something positive, we want to hear about it! The recognition BT, in partnership with the UK Youth Parliament, organise the Seen and Heard Awards as part of the Better World Campaign, which aims to provide young people with the skills and opportunities to effect real social change. If you're successful, you'll get the chance to tell your story through the 2009 Seen and Heard report – a publication which will be seen by young people, UK MPs and other decision makers around the world. Winners in the UK will also be invited to attend a national Seen and Heard awards ceremony, and have the chance to meet other young people like them.* How to enter Entering the awards is easy. If you're a young person, just tell us a little about what you have achieved by answering the questions on our entry form. You can also nominate a young person or group using the same downloadable form. To nominate an adult or organisation that has helped you to be Seen and Heard, simply follow the instructions on the website. Find out more about the awards and read stories from last year's winners by visiting the Better World website or by emailing us at seenandheard@bt.com The closing date for entries is 6 November 2009, so get those nominations in today...

Volunteering

Claire.Taylor@bitc.org.uk] My name is Claire Taylor and I work for a charity called Business in the Community on a programme called Cares, which is a brokerage service providing local charities and community groups with business volunteers to take part in volunteering projects. I am always looking for new projects in the region to make links with and I was wondering if you maybe able to help advise me on any youth groups in and around Sunderland who might be interested in taking part in a project. The way our projects work is that a team of up to 12 business volunteers spend a day at a project, this could be painting and decorating a community centre or old peoples home (for example we had a company decorating a day room at an Alzheimer’s day centre) or creating a community garden at a centre (we have had groups creating reading gardens at primary schools in the region) or hosting a party for service users at a centre (we have held Christmas parties at St Oswald’s Hospice). I was wondering if you knew of any youth groups who might be interested in having a makeover or have any rooms that would need painting? I would be very grateful if you could get in touch with me to let me know if you are interested or not, my contact details are at the end of the email. Below I have added some more information about Business in the Community and the Cares programme for you to have a look at. I look forward to hearing from you soon, Kind regards Claire --------------------------------- National Website: http://www.bitc.org.uk/ Regional pages: http://www.bitc.org.uk/north_east/index.html
