Sunderland Voluntary Sector Youth Forum - Issued: February 2012

Looking back at 2011

2011 was an exciting year for SVSYF and especially ‘Youth work in a digital age’. YWIDA conference

Following on from the North East first ever ‘Youth Work in a Digital Age’ conference, SVSYF and the working group have been to London to take part in the international Connected Generation conference. Check out Amanda’s guest blog here and here. We are busy developing a 'skills share' event for May/June to offer practical support for practitioners and hope to see you all there.

SVSYF and Community IT have delivered 8 local and 1 regional action learning sets to practitioners covering a host of topics including introduction to social media, broadcasting online, interactive presentations and fun with photos. Amanda has been asked to sit on an ‘expert panel’coordinated by Edinburgh University, where we will contribute to ideas of engaging with children and young people for research purposes.

In 2011
We’ve coordinated an important health message across the city, and have just been informed we’re the highest performing ‘youth sector’ in the region.
• We’ve written policy and guidelines that have been very well received at local, regional and national level.
• We’ve been sharing our expertise and delivering training to practitioners in Newcastle
• We’ve held 30 events and facilitated 22 training sessions across the city, that’s the equivalent of 1 per week!
• We’ve continued to work in partnership on a weekly basis with over 60 organisations and we are looking forward to continuing to do this in 2012.
In December Tracey left us to go on maternity leave and is now the proud Mum to Alfred James who at 16 days late was born on the 9th January weighing 8lb.

2012 will be a tough year for many of our members as the current economic climate means it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract funding and projects are having to deliver much more for less. Collaboration and partnership working is key to sustainability, Francesca is continuing to work with the 'All Together Consortium' who are working together to develop partnership bids for children and young peoples work. There continues to be a lot of fantastic work happening in all areas of the city and we will continue to support and promote this via SVSYF, so if you have a good news story feel free to send it to us.

Whatever this year has in store for us as a sector, the varied programme offered by youth providers will insure there is a whole host of activities that children and young people can participate in. Checkout the individual members pages for updated information.

Positive for Youth Statement

The statement brings together for the first time all of the Government’s policies for young people aged 13 to 19. It therefore covers a wide range of issues – from education and youth services, to health, crime, housing and more. Nine government departments have been involved in developing it – including the Department for Education, the Department of Health, the Home Office and the Department for Communities and Local Government. Young people and youth professionals have also been involved directly in developing the statement through extensive collaboration and consultation.

Building on the best local practice, Positive for Youth sets out a shared vision for how all parts of society can work together in partnership to support families and improve the lives of young people, particularly those who are most disadvantaged or vulnerable. It also includes a large number of case studies to exemplify the approaches it promotes.

The Positive for Youth statement and an executive summary are available to download in full.

Grief and Bereavement in Young people and children

Grief and loss affects us all and can be a difficult experience to come to terms with for ourselves or to know how to respond to in others. In supporting children and young people who have been bereaved adults can often feel at a loss at how to understand the reactions of children and young people and to know what to say or what to do for the best in supporting them through their grief.

Up to 75% of schools in the UK are dealing with a bereavement in a pupil at any one time. It is estimated that 1 in 25 children have experienced the bereavement of a parent or sibling - this equates to approx 1 child in every classroom.

This workshop aims to give you an understanding of loss and bereavement in the young and how best to support them through their grief. It will be a very interactive workshop giving you opportunities to explore any experiences of bereavement and any difficult issues that have arisen in your work in supporting children and young people.

Self Harm is an issue that is unfortunately quite common in young people and people who are vulnerable, have social issues and mental health diagnoses or who are just struggling with overwhelming emotions. This informative & participative workshop is to help you:

  • To develop the awareness and understanding of this often misunderstood issue.
  • To recognise that self-harm is usually a coping strategy which people may have developed as a way of expressing or relieving intense and overwhelming feelings and emotions.
  • To help carers and professionals working in a wide range of services, including health and mental health, education, youth work, drug & alcohol services, support services and counselling services, feel more confident in supporting those people who self-harm and where to get /refer to more specialised support.

These courses are also offered across the north of England, and Scotland. To find out more details, go to www.jilleastham.co.uk
