Welcome to the July 2009 edition of our e-newsletter

Most of you will know that Iam leaving the Forum at the end of this month to take up a new post in West Cumbria. I am really sad to be leaving; I've had an immensely rewarding and enjoyable time as the Forum's Development Manager. Its been such a privilege to work with what are without doubt some of the best youth work organisations in the region!

Together we made great progress in lots of areas. The work with NEET young people continues, Keyfund is back up running with more money than ever in the 'pot', our new website is getting lots of hits and nearly 5,000 young people across the City took part in the youth consultations.

I'd like to thank all the Trustees for their support and commitment over the years. Lisa Wilson as the Chair has been a great force in driving the organisation forward and Phil McAloon has continued to keep a watchful eye on the pennies. I'd also like to thank Amanda for all the work she has done and for putting up with my erratic filing system!

Finally, a sincere thanks to everyone I met and worked with during my many years of working in Sunderland.
Good luck everyone..........................

Steve Barna

keyfund logoWe held our first 3 Keyfund Community Panel Meetings recently and groups of young people have successfully presented their ideas to panel members from SNCBC, Gentoo, ODYPP, YDG and SVSYF. The panel meetings were well organised by the hosts (Phil Conn even provided chocolate biscuits, pop and crisps much to the delight of the young people) and the young people seemed to enjoy the experience.

Don't forget if you have groups registered who may be ready to go to panel soon, please book a slot on the community Panel meeting of your choice as slots for the summer are filling up really quickly. Check dates, times and venues on the online calendar below. We are also always looking for facilitators to sit on the panels so if you want to volunteer please get in touch.

Other areas of Interest

logo cypnowWhat is a positive activity? - The Children & Young People Now Show played host to a raft of high-profile speakers debating policy and practice on services for young people. One of the highlights was the discussion regarding the debate on positive activities. (C & YP Now 3rd June 09)

Simon Antrobus, Chief Executive of Clubs for Young People urged that the term positive activity should not be used to overcome social problems "I don't think it is about hoovering young people off the streets or reducing crime, its about engagement with young people and creating opportunities for them to demonstrate that they want to make positive contributions". Dominique Mitchell, an 18 year old member o the Nation Youth Agency's young researcher network said "You can create as many positive activities as you want but you can't force young people to go. For me positive activities are things I can go and have fun and don't have to pay for".

Responding to a question about whether volunteering should be seen as a positive activity, David Whewell referred to Gordon Brown's aspiration to make young people complete 50 hours of community service before they are 19. "When I think about who is currently made to undertake compulsory community work, the one group I think of is those that have committed crime, maybe Gordon Brown thinks being a young person is a crime?".

youthtaskforce reportYouth Task Force Report - Youth Task force Action Plan set out an ambitious programme of reforms to ensure every area has a joined-up and systematic approach to early identification, prevention and support for teenagers at risk. The reforms are focused on delivering services that are accessible, relevant, and responsive to feedback, ensuring that young people are supported at the earliest possible opportunity to resolve difficulties and make successful transitions to adulthood. This report documents how the Task force is helping to turn round some of our most difficult and vulnerable young people, with more than 30,000 benefiting directly from its work over the last year.

Talking point - do sex education campaigns need to be hard-hitting nowadays?
A video campaign aimed at cutting teenage pregnancy rates has caused controversy for showing scenes of a teenager giving birth in a school playground. Youtube pulled the campaign by NHS Leicester just 24 hours after if was uploaded for fear of causing offence. Tim Rideout, chief executive has defended the campaign saying the hard-hitting content is necessary to hammer home sexual health messages to traditionally hard-to-reach teenage girls, The campaign has also been backed by youth charity Street Dreams. If you want to view the video and check out some of the resources
drinkawareDrinkaware's unit calculator helps you work out how much alcohol you drank last night, along with the number of alcohol units and calories. You then have the option to sign up to a drinks diary and track your drinking over time.
