Summer Programme 2009
High Sheriff’s Award
A group of our young people have been recognised
for the work they have undertaken on tackling racism. The High Sheriff of Tyne & Wear presented them with a
certificate of achievement and a cheque for £1,000 on 19 March
at an Award Ceremony in
Gateshead.
The money will be used to fund further youth work activities at the
Centre.
14-19 Quality Assurance Standard.
HYPP has achieved the City of
Sunderland’s silver standard for the
educational work that we undertake with 14-19 years olds. This demonstrates
that the learning opportunities we offer are of a good quality and
acknowledges the team’s commitment to ensuring young people are able to
achieve to their full potential.
Fitness Friday
This piece of work was developed in partnership
with the Raich Carter Centre (RCC) in response to
complaints that large numbers of young people were congregating within the
vicinity of the sports centre on Friday nights causing nuisance to people
using the Centre. Our detached youth workers began working with the young
people and in conjunction with the RCC developed the Fitness Friday
Initiative to encourage young people who were not using the Centre to get
more involved in sports and physical activities as an alternative to hanging
around the streets. The RCC has provided facilities free of charge and workers
from HYPP and the RCC supervise a range of sports and other activities every
Friday night. The initiative has proven to be a huge success with an average
of 150 young people now involved in the activities provided. Many of the
young people are now also engaged in other youth work activities.
